Experts Harp On Preservation Of Bees
Experts have called for the preservation of bees as parts of efforts towards achieving food security in Nigeria.
They spoke in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, during an event organised by the Apicultural Association of Ogun State to commemorate the 2021 World Bee Day.
Prof. Olusegun Lawal of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, emphasised that bees pollinate majority of crop produce being consumed by human beings, hence the need for their preservation.
Prof. Lawal, in his lecture, maintained that bees also help in ensuring that there is balanced ecosystem.
“It will interest you to know that bees act as pollinators to between 60 to 70 per cent of the food we eat and also take care of our ecosystem. So bees are very important, he said.
He advocated for a national policy on the protection of bees warning that Nigerians may face famine if there are no enough and adequate pollination system.
The President of the association, Prof. Adebola Osipitan, promised that members will always strive towards producing organic honey.
He however sought the collaboration of government and relevant stakeholders in the quest to attain food security in the country.
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State Ahmed Umar, assured that the FRSC and other security agencies wild ensure seamless movement of agricultural products and service providers.
He solicited for the training of interested FRSC personnel in bee farming and production.
