Nigerian youths aspiring to careers in the hospitality industry have been advised to strengthen their information technology and digital competencies to remain competitive on the global stage.

This call was made at a seminar in Lagos, jointly organised by the German Resource Centre and the Migrant Resource Centre (MRC).

Speaking at the event, Dr Austin Ezejiofor of the German Resource Centre highlighted the rising international demand for skilled professionals in information technology, engineering, and hospitality.

Also addressing participants, Mrs Adeola Edatomola, likewise representing the German Resource Centre, urged young Nigerians to broaden their horizons and embrace opportunities beyond national borders.

“Governments across Africa are improving airports and roads to attract tourists. Professionals must be problem solvers, learn international languages like French, Arabic, and Kiswahili, and diversify their skills,” she said.

During a panel session, hospitality industry expert Mr Emmanuel Ele stressed the growing role of technology in the sector. “AI, social media management, and content creation are now part of hospitality. Young people need to follow trends and upgrade their technical skills,” he said.

He further noted that certifications in hotel management, food and beverages, and digital marketing are increasingly essential.

In her remarks, Maureen Ovie, Head of the Migrant Resource Centre (MRC), Lagos State, highlighted the impact of collaboration with the German Resource Centre. She explained that the partnership has already helped reduce irregular migration. “We tell young Nigerians not to risk illegal migration. Opportunities exist here if they skill up,” she said.

One beneficiary of the programme, hospitality professional Miss Debora, described how the initiative transformed her career. “I’ve learned to think outside the box. Because of MRC and the German Resource Centre, I’ve won two international grants,” she revealed.

For young Nigerians, the message was clear: the future of hospitality extends beyond serving guests; it now demands mastering technology, developing global skills, and creating sustainable opportunities.
