A Non-Governmenral Organization – The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria has called for a better and safer ways of distributing the Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) with a view to ending the carnage arising from petrol tankers accidents across Nigeria.

The call came in the wake of the last week accident in Jigawa State which reportedly killed 170 people with several others still hospitalised for serious injuries.

In a press statement released and jointly signed by its National Coordinator, Ibrahim Abdullahi and the National Secretary, Nasir Balogun, the Group identifies movement of petrol tankers for long hours on long distances and inadequate supervision by the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) as factors responsible for the sad incidents.

They therefore called for immediate halt to the lapses to save people’s lives, noting that most petrol tanker drivers often appear exhausted on the roads.

The Group also called on the Federal Ministry of Transportation as well as the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources “to synergise and evolve better distribution strategies for petroleum distribution, that would ‘nip-in-the-bud’ frequent fall of Petroleum Tankers leading to killing of a lot of  people.”

While sympathising with the government and the people of Jigawa State over the last week incident, the Muslim Media Watch Group similarly called on Federal and State Governments to collaborate with the media organizations in organising sensitisation programmes in the media.

According to them. the programmes should include featuring jingles in the electronic media platforms in various local languages on the dangers inherent in scooping of petroleum products by the ignorant locals whenever petrol tanker falls on the roads.
