Defending champions Manchester City reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup after beating Newcastle United 2-0, courtesy of two deflected strikes from Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva, at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

Manchester City opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Silva’s shot took a deflection into the net off Newcastle defender Dan Burn, beating goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

The home side extended its lead in the 31st minute through Silva when his strike deflected off Newcastle defender Sven Botman to steer the ball past Dubravka.

Both sides created several chances in the second half but the scores remained the same as Manchester City held on to seal a comfortable victory to reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

Manchester City joined Coventry City in the semis, who pulled off a shock 3-2 win against Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier.

On Sunday, remaining quarter-final ties featuring Chelsea will face Leicester City in the quarter finals while a blockbuster clash will take place between Manchester United and Liverpool at Old Trafford in the other quarter-final match.
