FA Cup: Manchester City Beats Peterborough, Reaches Quarter-Finals
Manchester City reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup after a 2-0 victory against Peterborough United courtesy of goals from Algerian Riyad Mahrez and Jack Grealish at the Weston Homes Stadium in England.
Zinchenko was handed the honour of leading City by Fernandinho as a show of support against Russia’s invasion of his homeland. The visitors started with Gabriel Jesus up front, with Grealish and Mahrez supporting on the wings. Peterborough had Kwame Poku, Ricky Jade-Jones and Sammie Szmodics in attack.
The hosts were resilient in keeping the Premier League leaders from scoring in the first half with some brilliant defending.. German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan had two chances to score in the first half but couldn’t find the target as the Championship side held firm.
After the break, Peterborough started strongly as Szmodics fired wide, while Phil Foden intervened with a superb last-ditch tackle to take the ball off Jorge Grant’s toes just as he was about to get a shot away from inside the City penalty area.
However, City’s quality eventually showed as Mahrez broke the deadlock with a left-footed strike, beating goalkeeper Steven-Andreas Benda.
City continued to create more chances as they looked to extend its lead. The Algerian Mahrez also missed a good chance to double the lead moments later. However, Grealish put the match beyond Peterborough’s reach.

Foden’s ball over the top released Grealish and his perfect first touch took him in on goal as he scored his first FA Cup goal.
Peterborough tried to find its way back into the game through substitute Jack Marriott but the City defence stood firm. The match finished 2-0 to City as the referee blew the final whistle.
Six-time FA Cup winners, Manchester City, will be hoping for a place in the semi-final of the competition after the next round of draws on Thursday.
