Nigeria’s U-20 women, the Falconets, moved a step closer to qualifying for this year’s FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, tagged Costa Rica 2022, after beating Senegal 3-1 in their first leg tie at the Stade Lat-Dior in Thies.

Edo Queens winger Flourish Sebastine scored a hat-trick to put the Falconets in a commanding position. Togolese referee Vincenta Amedome offered the hosts a consolation goal from the penalty spot in the 89th minute after captain Oluwatosin Demehin tripped a Senegalese forward in the Nigerian box.

However, the two-time World Cup runners-up produced a brilliant performance, showing great skill and determination to claim victory against a resilient Senegalese side.

“We had a good result here with this 3-1 away win. But in football, until the referee blows the whistle for the end of the game, you can’t say you’re qualified,” Nigeria U-20 women’s coach Christopher Danjuma said.

“This means that we are going to prepare for the return leg, forgetting the result obtained this Saturday against a very talented Senegalese team.”

Moreover, for this first leg, we tried to put the odds on our side by finding as much information as possible on this Senegalese team which nevertheless eliminated Morocco that is doing a good job in women’s football,” he added.

The return leg will take place at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City on Saturday, 26th March.
