FCT Minister pledges to support labour movement

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Malam Mohammed Bello, has promised to support the labour movement in the territory, by providing better working conditions.

The minister made the promise on Sunday in Abuja while delivering his address at the Workers’ Day parade.

According to him, the May Day celebration is the most important day for workers globally, as it affords them the opportunity to make demands on government.

He advised Nigerian workers to cooperate with the government in its effort to rebuild the country and move it toward prosperity and progress.

“May 1st is the single, most important day for workers globally and I congratulate Nigeria workers for today’s celebration.

“We will do everything possible to improve the lot of workers in the FCT; but I can only urge them to support Mr President as he takes steps to rebuild Nigeria.’’

Meanwhile, Mr Amaechi Lawrence, the Chairman, FCT chapter of the Nigeria Labour congress, urged the minister to make the development of satellite towns a priority.

Lawrence commended the minister for his intervention to end the strike by workers in the six area councils due to unpaid salaries, while pledging the chapters’ support to the FCT Administration.

“We are calling on the FCT Minister to focus development efforts on the suburbs of the FCT which have been neglected by previous administrations.

“We commend you for releasing N1.6 billion bail-out fund to the FCT area councils for the payment of arrears of staff salaries, and we undertake to cooperate with the administration to deliver on its promises,’’ he said.
