FCTA intensifies war against drug abuse

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has intensified the war against Drug Abuse through its Enlightenment Campaign for Secondary Schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).  

The Secretary of Health and Human Services Secretariat, Dr. Abubakar Tafida gave this hint during a campaign in commemoration of 2021 International Day Against Drug Abuses and Illicit Drug Trafficking at Government Girls Secondary School, Dutse with the Theme; Share Facts on Drugs, Save Lives.  

While addressing the students, the Secretary who was represented by the Chairman FCT-Drug Mis-Use Control Committee (DMCC) Pharmacist  Boniface Ikwu stated that the meeting aims to converse facts to save lives.   

Pharmacist Ikwu admonished students to disseminate the knowledge received to their counterparts because they have a pivotal role to play by sharing information about Drug Abuse with their peers who were not in meetings. 

” Facts on Drug Abuses range from causes and possible prevention of the Abuses. The Media has a huge role to play through robust publicity on Drug Abuse which is a pandemic in the  

society“, Pharmacist Ikwu added. 

Earlier, Pharmacist Uche Exe, a Deputy Director Department of Pharmaceutical Services in Wuse District Hospital, said drug abuse is the use of illegal drugs, Substances, or using of a prescription drug in a manner that is not recommended. 

According to him, “As a fact, Globally Two Hundred and Seventy-Five (275) Million people Abuse Drugs yearly and in the year 2020, over Thirty (30) Million people suffered from drug uses and in Nigeria Three Hundred and Seventy-Six (376,000) Thousand population are marked High Risk of Drug Abuse and this target population is young people”. 

Abusing Drugs according to Pharmacist Eze comes with other consequences as injection of drugs exposes users to other ailments such as HIV/AIDs. 

The event was attended by secondary schools and primary schools around that zone with His Royal Highness of Dutse gracing the occasion.
