The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has trained over 200 farmers and agricultural field officers on the effective use of organic fertiliser to boost agricultural productivity in the territory.

Acting Secretary, Agricultural and Rural Development Secretariat (ARDS), Ibe Chukwuemeka, in his opening remark on Thursday at Kwali Area Council said that the training was part of efforts to increase food production and security.

Chukwuemeka explained that the initiative was timely coming during the rainy season farming activities.

This, he added, would greatly guide farmers on ways to address soil infertility and crop failure through the use of synthetic fertilizers.

He further noted that capacity building especially for extension agents and field officers had been a priority for the secretariat, due to their closeness to the rural farmers who need knowledge of efficient farming techniques.

The use of organic fertilizers both granular and liquid, the Acting Secretary said was an innovation practised globally and helps to promote rapid nutrient absorption by plants.

According to him, organic fertilizer improves soil fertility and plant growth, leading to a bumper harvest.

Chukwuemeka, therefore, called on FCT farmers to embrace the new approach assuring that the FCT Administration would not relent in its effort to find lasting solutions to the problem of crop failure being experienced by them

Meanwhile, it was reported that the trainees were drawn from the six area councils of the FCT.
