The Federal Executive Council FEC has approved the sum of N2.2 billion to procure some navigational communication equipment for Port Harcourt International Airport.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, made this known on Wednesday while briefing State House Correspondents after the Council Meeting presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Minister stated that the equipment to be procured is mainly for communication and is called remote assets devices and other accessories to be used for the wide-area multilateral air traffic management system.
“The second memo has to do with some navigational equipment at the Port Harcourt International Airport. The communication equipment. They call them the VHF FM radios, remote assets, devices and other accessories for the wide area multilateration air traffic management system at Port Harcourt.
“What we want to do is that once we concentrate on the part of aviation that attracts the optics or call the optics to clean toilets, the buildings go there arrival halls and all of that, that the public will want to see we see all the time. There are very complex issues behind the scenes that have to do with the safety of our air spaces and all of that.”
Mr Keyamo explained that this will focus on the optic part of the aviation industry, facilitating more travelers’ safety.
“So we are purchasing this equipment for topcoats international airports at the sum of 2,227,000,007 Naira inclusive of 7.5% VAT with a delivery period of nine months and it has been awarded in favour of a company that is the representative of one of the best companies in the world that produce such navigation such communication equipment for the aviation sector.
The Minister added that the procurement of the equipment would be done within nine months and has been awarded in favour of a renowned company that produces such communication navigation equipment in the aviation sector
“The first memo is a contract on Technical Support Services on an initial contract with the C, the Chinese company that built the Lagos international wing of our airports in other international new terminals, basically this is the one in Lagos that you remember when I came on board because it was underutilized because of assets to replace by the wide-body aircraft. I gave a directive that all the airlines should move there. And I wish you board passengers to that terminal so that we can work on the old terminal.” The Minister said.
The Minister stressed that due to increased traffic and pressure on the facilities at the newly built Chinese terminal, the federal government struck a deal with the same company to maintain the facilities for the first five years.
“ So because of that there has been increased traffic and pressure on the facilities in that new Chinese terminal, the one that they built. We don’t want the place to deteriorate without maintenance. And sometimes if you wait for too long, and facilities deteriorate, it is costly to maintain or repair those facilities. So from the word go, we have struck a deal with the same people who built the place. It’s only natural that they are the same ones who should maintain their facilities for the first five years.
“ We have said that they should maintain their chillers, the air handling units the passenger boarding bridge, the escalators are on course, the remote boarding lifts that were specifically made for the physically challenged and all those facilities that could it is for five years, the first five years for a contract sum of 4.1 billion inclusive of 7.5% is what I will ship kind of as I said with a commission period of five years,” the Minister added.
