Female Military Veterans Association (FMVAN) has been Inaugurated and Launched to support and empower female veterans as well as foster their resilience.
The launching and inauguration took place at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre in Abuja, Nigeria’s Capital.
Speaking during the inauguration, the second female to attain the rank of a Major General in the Nigerian Army, retired Major General Tilewa Ausu said it is easier to put pressure as a group to drive changes than fighting alone, hence the need for the association.
She said the platform also offers a wide range of people with different skill sets to serve in various capacities even after retirement.
“This association includes people from the Army, Navy, and Air Force and includes all ranks after retirement to give us a stronger voice, to advance the cause of the female veterans, expose them to different organisations to serve after retirement.”
Also speaking, the National Coordinator of the Female Military Veterans Association, Moranike Henry said after seeing and hearing the common challenges that retired female personnel share in post-service life, it became necessary to bring them together under one umbrella.
According to her, the association seeks to bring females who have served in the military under one platform to support one another and relate their experiences as women.
“Most female veterans are single mothers, some do not have children to cater for them, and have to live on very little post-retirement salary, some of the stories of our female retirees are very touching.”
The Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, retired Major General Abdulmalik Jibril stated that the association had a unique role to play which is connected to the Nigerian Legion.
He promised the collaboration and support of the Nigerian Legion.
There were goodwill messages from the Director General of the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Director of Veterans Affairs Defence Headquarters, Director of Veterans Affairs (Army), Director of Veterans Affairs (Navy), Director of Veterans Affairs (Air Force), Chief of Admin Nig Airforce, Ex-Director of Veterans Affairs (Army) amongst other civilian organisations that were represented.
