FG To Host D-8 Organisation For Economic Cooperation Summit on Agriculture

In a bid to address the issue of food insecurity in Nigeria, Senator Abubakar Kyari, Honourable Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, has declared that the Ministry is prepared to host the D-8 Organisation for Economic Cooperation Summit on Agriculture in 2024.

He made this known during a recent courtesy visit to his office in Abuja by Ambassador Isiaka Abdulqadir Imam, the Secretary General of D8 Countries in Africa.

Senator Kyari emphasized the importance of this partnership, noting that the overall aim is to collectively tackle challenges endangering food security in Nigeria.

He further stressed the urgency of embracing Climate Smart Agriculture, explaining its importance as a solution to contemporary agriculture.

Speaking on the demographic concerns, Senator Kyari pointed out that Nigeria’s population, which was less than 30 million in the 60s, is projected to surpass 400 million by 2050. Expressing concern about the potential strain on resources due to climate change and insecurity, he underscored the need for innovative solutions for future generations.

With a vision for the proposed summit, Senator Kyari expressed optimism that Nigeria could obtain valuable insights and experiences from other nations, fortifying its strategies to combat food insecurity.

Remarking, the Ambassador highlighted the organization’s objectives, emphasizing the need for Nigeria to prioritize Climate Smart Agriculture.

He disclosed the establishment of an Agriculture Research Centre in Pakistan, operational since March 2023, and extended an invitation for collaboration and support from all member states.
