The United Nations Climate Change Executive Secretary, Simon Stiell has said world can only overcome the climate crisis with adequate funding.
Addressing the media stakeout on Wednesday on Negotiations of COP 28 at the ongoing 2023 UN Climate Change Summit in Dubai, Simon Stiell said finance is the great enabler for climate action, tasking all government including Nigeria to give their negotiators clear marching orders.
“Finance is the great enabler for climate action. The negotiations must put it front and center. Loss and damage was a win, but we’re kidding ourselves if we think it’s a tick in the box for finance and support at this COP; more is required”.
He said UN need enhanced transparency to deliver their promise to fund climate action across the world.
According to Stiell, the Global Stocktake is the vehicle to get climate action on track.
“We must not lose any focus on the Global Goal for Adaptation. Eight billion people are on the frontlines. Right now only 50 countries have National Adaptation Plans.” He pointed.
He said at the end of next week, UN need COP to deliver a bullet train to speed up climate action as the tools, technologies and solutions are available for governments and negotiators to pick them up and put them to work.
