Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, celebrates the strength and achievements of women and girls of African descent as the world marks the International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent, held annually on July 25.
In her message, Mrs Tinubu acknowledges their resilience and accomplishments in the face of persistent barriers.
“Today, I join millions of Nigerians as we commemorate the International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent, a day that honours the strength, resilience, and courage of African women and girls everywhere,” she says.
“Across the world, women and girls of African descent continue to excel despite facing historical and systemic barriers. We use this day to celebrate you as you take care of your families and continue to excel. I say well done.”
She urges women and girls not to relent in their pursuits.
“You have all come a long way, we are proud of all your achievements as you keep the African spirit alive. Long live women and girls of African descent,” the First Lady adds.
Mrs Tinubu also sends a goodwill message to Nigeria’s national women’s football team, the Super Falcons, as they face host nation Morocco in the final of the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
