Floods: Anambra State Governor Supports Victims with Food Items
Chinwe Onuigbo, Awka.
The Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has sent food items to flood victims in Awka North Local Government Area as part of efforts aimed at cushioning the effect of floods ravaging some parts of the state.
(Most communities in Anambra State are still battling with flood).
The relief materials were delivered through the Local Government Transition Committee chairman, Mr. Emmanuel Ucheze.
Awka North Local Government Area has three holding centres: Agueke Primary School Ugbenu, which houses over one hundred and fifty (150) displaced persons; Central School Ugbene, which has over two hundred and fifty (250) persons; and Central School, Awba-Ofemili with over five hundred (500) displaced persons.
Governor Soludo sent, among other items, two live cows to each camp, bags of rice, beans, tubers of yam, bags of garri, onions, gallons of palm oil and groundnut oil.
The most affected place, Awba-Ofemili, can only be accessed through a boat, hence the Chairman, his entourage and food items got to Awba-Ofemili using a canoe.
Addressing the displaced persons at various camps, Governor Soludo through the Transition Committee Chairman of Awka North Local Government Area, Mr. Emmanuel Ucheze said that the State is concerned about their condition and will do everything possible to reduce the effect on them.
He encouraged them to remain strong and called on good-spirited individuals to also support the displaced persons.
The Governor inspected the level of damage caused by the deluge and assured to report back for strategic and timely interventions.
A stakeholder in Awka North Local Government Area, Chief Lawrence Onwuzuka, and the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) party for Awka North State constituency in the forthcoming general election, harped on the need for the federal government to proffer a lasting solution to the deluge.
While regretting the lives, properties and farmlands lost, they commended Governor Soludo for being proactive in responding to the ugly situation.
Responding, the President-General of Ugbenu community, Mr. Samson Ojoh, and Igwe Chimakwa of Ugbene also thanked Governor Soludo for his visit and called for more interventions, especially in the area of healthcare delivery.
