He disclosed a vision for the newly established ministry to include comprehensive reforms aimed at “unbundling” the sector, strengthening infrastructure, and meeting Nigeria’s growing demand for animal protein.

Maiha emphasized that his first priority will be to collaborate with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.

According to him, “This partnership will help align strategic plans and build on the work initiated by the Presidential Committee on the Implementation of Livestock Reforms, chaired by Professor Attahiru Jega.”

The pioneer Minister added that his initial focus will be on identifying “low-hanging fruits” within the livestock sector while also prioritizing quick and impactful actions.

He said the ministry has already gathered extensive data on livestock infrastructure, including grazing reserves, cattle routes, and water resources, which will guide efforts to improve facilities and make them more attractive to herders, reducing the need for constant movement.

Maiha stressed that data-driven decision-making will be central to the ministry’s approach.

“What you cannot measure, you cannot change,” he said, noting that the focus extends “beyond large livestock to smaller animals such as sheep, goats, pigs, and poultry.” The Minister added.
