A former Federal Lawmaker representing the Aguata Federal Constituency and an All Progressives Congress (APC) member, Chukwuma Umeoji, has officially declared his intention to run for the Anambra State Governorship in the 2025 elections, promising a new era for the state.

Umeoji, who previously served in the 9th National Assembly, made the announcement at the APC Secretariat in Awka, the state capital, where he was welcomed by the party’s State Executive Committee led by the State Chairman Chief Basil Ejidike.

In his declaration, Umeoji, a former ECOWAS Parliamentarian, asserted his qualifications as a committed APC member, emphasizing his eligibility to contest without requiring a waiver.

He called for the selection of the party’s candidate for the November 8th election to be based on experience, proven capacity, and a deep understanding of the people’s needs.

Drawing from his extensive background in public service, Umeoji expressed confidence in his ability to lead Anambra towards peace and development. He highlighted his dedication to understanding the desires of the Anambra people, stating that his previous roles have equipped him with a practical insight into the State’s aspirations.

Citing Section 14, (2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, which emphasizes that “the security and welfare of the people are the primary purpose of government,” Umeoji discussed his commitment to restoring peace in Anambra, supported by his experience as a former member of the Anambra State Vigilante Supervisory Committee (ASVSC) and Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON). His work in these roles provided him with critical insights into local security dynamics.

He said his leadership roles include:

“Executive Chairman of Aguata Local Government (2014 – 2017)

Transitional Committee Chairman of Aguata LGA (2017)

Representative in the House of Representatives (6th and 9th Assemblies)

Member of the ECOWAS Parliament, contributing to regional development (5th Legislature).”

Chief Umeoji added that his notable track record positions him as a candidate who could lead the APC to victory if granted the party’s nomination.

In addition to his legislative accomplishments, Umeoji emphasized his three-year tenure with the Anambra State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (ASPHCDA), where he gained familiarity with health centers across the state. “With my expertise in this sector, I’m confident in my ability to implement effective strategies to enhance our health institutions,” he said.

He noted that his previous role in the Anambra State Land Acquisition and Mediation Committee allowed him to engage directly with various communities, further enriching his understanding of their unique challenges. He affirmed his capacity to develop targeted solutions that would foster growth and development from the outset of his potential governorship.

Umeoji further stated that his experience with financial oversight bodies, including the Public Accounts Committee of the ECOWAS Parliament and the Anambra State Joint Account Committee (JAAC), equips him with the skills needed to manage the state’s revenue effectively, ensuring that taxpayer funds are utilized in the best interests of the public.

State zoning

In response to a question regarding the sensitive topic of zoning in Anambra, Umeoji acknowledged the emotional weight of the issue. While zoning may not always be formally documented, he noted its understanding in the political landscape, citing Nigeria’s unwritten zoning formula and a recent survey indicating that 71% of Anambra residents support zoning.

Concluding his address, Umeoji expressed gratitude to the State Executive Committee for their dedication and perseverance, promising his support for the party’s chosen candidate.

Chief Chukwuma Umeoji was accompanied by a distinguished delegation of former state officials, State House of Assembly members, executive chairmen, and key party members during his visit to the APC Secretariat.
