Women in Nigeria have been called upon to build their capacity in areas of competence so as to be confident and remain relevant in their chosen careers.
The Former Permanent Secretary Ministry of Interior, Barrister Georgina Ehuriah Arisa made the call at an event held to commemorate 2021 Women’s Day.
Ehuriah decried that the Public sector is in short supply of women who are talented, women who have the capacity and have demonstrated their capacity for high-quality work.
She also called for capacity building among Nigerian Women in Public Service
According to her, “For women to gain the edge in their workplace, they must have a good understanding of the career field they have chosen and obtain what is required to excel in it.”
She emphasised the recommendation of personal development and improvement of SMART goals with deadlines.
Arisa stressed that a realistic assessment will reveal the gap that needs to be filled in terms of capacity for women, using the core competencies of an individual’s organisation and the skill set required to excel in it as the benchmark.
Speaking on her Book titled, To serve and to be honoured on Merit, she identified the useful tool of “SWOT analysis, which contains a critical list of one’s strengths, weaknesses, strategic opportunities, Threats and Risks to career mobility.
“This will lead to embarking on a capacity development journey by undertaking graduate or postgraduate studies and professional certifications”
“This edge is gained by the outcome, which should be evident in the consistently high standard of one’s output, service delivery and attitude” Arisa added.
The International Women Day 2021 was held on 8th of March in Nigeria, with the theme “Choose to Challenge.”
