A United States-based charity foundation, Tilova for Africa, has called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to implement policies that protect economically vulnerable and low-income residents in Anambra State.

During an advocacy visit to the Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, in Awka, the foundation’s co-founder, Mr Martin Nwabueze, praised Governor Soludo for his transformative work in infrastructure and efforts to combat insecurity in the state.

Nwabueze stressed the need for economic policies that would expand financial opportunities for the majority of the population. He proposed tax waivers and protective legislation for workers in the service industry, allowing them to legally receive gratuities.

“This visit is part of our ongoing campaign to decriminalise tips and improve the welfare of workers in both the public and private sectors,” Nwabueze said.

“We have been closely monitoring the activities of Governor Soludo’s administration, and we are impressed with the progress made in infrastructure and the efforts to make Awka a worthy state capital. The security initiatives have also been commendable; people now feel safer moving around the state compared to before,” he added.

While applauding the administration’s strides, Nwabueze urged further action to reduce economic hardship among the poor. He advocated a reduction in taxes and levies imposed on transport operators and small business owners—whether charged by government or unions.

“Moreover, minimum wage workers in service industries such as hotels and bars should be allowed to accept tips from satisfied customers. This additional income is crucial for them, and the government should do away with any criminalisation of this practice. Accepting tips is neither bribery nor corruption; it is a form of compensation for good service,” he asserted.

Nwabueze also voiced support for Governor Soludo’s social moral rebirth campaign but emphasised that no citizen should face discrimination based on religious beliefs. He underscored the importance of upholding the rule of law in handling any alleged infractions.

He commended Dr Mefor for his dedication to public communication and for maintaining open dialogue with stakeholders.

In response, Dr Law Mefor reaffirmed the Soludo administration’s commitment to the well-being of Anambra citizens and highlighted the role of constructive feedback in policy development.

“Governor Soludo is deeply concerned about improving the lives of the Anambra people, and your suggestions regarding social reorientation represent a long-term vision that we are eager to pursue in partnership with your foundation,” Mefor stated.
