The Wikimedia Foundation has called on Journalists in Kaduna State to leverage their professional expertise to contribute to Wikipedia and help expand access to global knowledge.

President of the Wikimedia Usergroup Nigeria, Kaduna Network, Ramatu Haliru, made the call during the monthly congress of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) held at the NUJ Secretariat in Kaduna.

Addressing members of NAWOJ, Haliru described Wikipedia as a platform that draws content from a range of tertiary sources, including news articles, textbooks, and academic journals.

According to her, “It is essential for journalists to collaborate in promoting knowledge and addressing common inquiries made by internet users.”

She clarified that participation in Wikimedia Foundation initiatives is entirely voluntary, as the organisation operates on a non-profit basis. However, she noted that numerous campaigns, competitions, and training opportunities are available for those interested in contributing.

Haliru also expressed the Kaduna Network’s readiness to partner with NAWOJ, stressing the potential impact women journalists could make through consistent knowledge sharing.

Responding on behalf of NAWOJ, Chairperson of the Kaduna State Chapter, Comrade Sahura Maidoki, commended the initiative and expressed confidence in the members’ willingness to get involved.

“We appreciate this opportunity and are eager to collaborate in sharing our knowledge and expertise,” she said.

The initiative underscores the growing role of journalists in advancing public access to information and fostering a culture of digital knowledge-sharing.
