The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, under the leadership of Sector Commander Joyce Alexander, has kicked off the 2024 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Crash Victims with a commemorative church service at Living Faith Church in Awka, the state capital.

According to Commander Alexander, “The annual remembrance day program was established through Resolutions of the African Executive Council and United Nations Resolution and is observed every third week of November. This year, the activities began on the 17th of November with the church service, followed by hospital visitations, and will end with mosque prayers on Friday.

“The purpose of the remembrance day is to honor those who lost their lives or were injured in road traffic crashes and to provide support to their families.”

Commander Alexander emphasized the importance of road safety and urged road users to remember that the statistics of road traffic cases represent real people, not just numbers.

During the church service, Commander Alexander read the address of Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, who highlighted the evolution of road safety as a global public issue since the first automobile accident in 1869.
Pastor Favour Olusina of Living Faith Church Awka also delivered a message on sanctification and offered prayers for the safety of the command officers as they carried out the week-long activities.

Commander Alexander expressed gratitude for the support from the church and the community in observing the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Crash Victims.

“The week-long activities serve as a reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for everyone to play their part in preventing road traffic crashes.

“The command is dedicated to promoting road safety and supporting crash victims and their families. By participating in the 2024 World Day of Remembrance, we aim to raise awareness about the impact of road traffic crashes and encourage everyone to prioritize safety on the road.

“As the command continues with its activities for the remembrance week, we encourage road users to take responsibility for their actions on the road and to always prioritize safety. Through education, awareness, and support, we hope to reduce the number of road traffic crashes and ultimately save lives,” the Commander said.

The 2024 World Road Traffic Crash Victims Remembrance Week is themed “That Day,” focusing on the stories of how traffic collisions have forever changed or stopped the lives of the victims.

As the command continues to raise awareness about road safety and honor crash victims, they hope to remind road users of the human impact behind the statistics.
