Fuel Price: Police urges Transport Unions to uphold peace

The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Victor Olaiya has admonished the various transport unions in the state to always uphold peace , emphasizing that the state is known for its harmonious, peace-loving nature.

He made this appeal when he held a meeting with representatives of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Motorcycle Operators Union of Nigeria (MOUN), Tricycle Owners Association of Nigeria (TOAN) at the Command’s headquarters following the strike action embarked on 5th September 2024 in response to the recent hike in the price of PMS also known as petrol.

The meeting which was attended by Senior Special Assistant to State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq; Aliyu Muyideen and other top security officers

The police boss reassured the union that the Nigerian Government is actively addressing the current economic situation to improve the lives of all Nigerians.

Olaiya also encouraged the transport unions to channel any concerns, particularly regarding security, through their Chairmen.

He emphasized the importance of dialogue and cooperation, assuring them that the state Governor AbdulRazaq, stands in full support of their well-being and is ready to assist them in all matters.

The meeting ended with a renewed commitment to maintaining peace and ensuring the continued safety and prosperity of all residents in the State.

 

Meanwhile, the Police has extended its heartfelt condolences to the family of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola who lost his life during the recent fuel hike protest in the state.

 

The deceased, a National Diploma two (ND2) Electrical Electronic Engineering of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin was allegedly shot dead by a police personnel.

 

The Police in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, DSP Toun Ejire-Adeyemi sympathized with the family, friends, and all those affected by this unfortunate event which occurred on 4th September, 2024.

 

“The loss of a loved one, especially in such circumstances, is a burden that no family should have to bear alone. 

 

“Our thoughts are with you, and we pray for strength and comfort for everyone involved. On behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Victor Olaiya , he assures the family that we stand with them in this difficult moment and are committed to seeking justice on behalf of the deceased” the statement added”.

 

“Following the incident, a thorough investigation has already commenced and actors and witnesses have been identified. The Kwara State Police Command is fully dedicated to uncovering the facts of the matter and ensuring that those responsible, are brought to justice in accordance with the law. We are working with care and diligence, as we understand the importance of providing clear answers to the family and community. Our commitment to transparency in this investigation is unwavering, and we pledge to conduct the process with the utmost integrity, leaving no room for doubt or compromise” the police hierarchy explained further.”

 

He therefore appealed to the public, the student’s community and those directly impacted, to remain calm and allow the law to take its rightful course stressing that while emotions may be high, it urged everyone to avoid actions that could hinder the investigation or disrupt public order.

 

The DSP added that the Command is mindful of its duty to serve, protect, and promised to keep the public informed of any new developments as the investigation progresses.

 

Rector Commiserates With Bamidele Family

 

Similarly, the Rector, Kwara State Polytechnic, Abdul Muhammed has expressed sadness over the demise of the Student, Abdulqoyum Bamidele.

 

In a statement issued and signed by the spokesperson of the Polytechnic, Mrs Halimat Garba, disclosed that the sad incident allegedly took place on Wednesday, September 4, 2024 around the GRA in Ilorin.

 

According to the statement, the circumstances around the young and promising student’s death are still dicey as there were many unconfirmed stories and narratives around it.

 

He added that the school Management is committed to ensuring that justice is served as appropriate based on the final reports of the matter.

 

Abdul appreciated the students for being calm and not taking laws into their hands, stressing that, as the investigation unfolds, the Polytechnic community remains resolute in its demand for accountability and justice for Abdulqoyyum.

 

The Rector commiserated with the family of the deceased and the entire Polytechnic community on this sad development and prayed that God gives the family, friends, classmates and the entire Polytechnic the strength to bear the huge loss.
