By Segun Adegoke, Osogbo

The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila-Orangun (FUHSI), Osun State, Professor Akeem Lasisi has urged newly admitted students to uphold both academic excellence and strong moral character.

Professor Lasisi said success in education is incomplete without integrity and discipline.

He gave the advice on Tuesday in Ila-Orangun, at a two-day orientation programme organised for the newly admitted students for 2024/2025 academic session.

Represented by the Deputy Vice chancellor, Professor Monsuru Adeleke, Professor Lasisi said “good character could bolster academic excellence in more ways than one.”

According to him, “no matter how brilliant a student might be, if he or she lacks good character, such student might not go far in life.”

Professor Lasisi urged the new students to embrace good character and shun all forms of vices and immorality.

He said any student who lacked the required learning and good character trait stood the chance of losing his or her admission.

Professor Lasisi urged the students to count themselves lucky for being admitted, stressing that more than 4,000 candidates applied to the university out of which only 1000 were selected.

Good character is very important and that is why before a certificate can be awarded to any student, he or she must be found worthy both in character and learning.

“Be diligent and strive to be the best in your academics,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor also said the orientation programme was put in place to open the eyes and minds of the students to different aspects of university life.

He added that the orientation programme would assist the students in understanding what is expected of them as students of the university.

If after this orientation you go against the rules and regulations of the school, you will be penalised,” he warned.

An official of Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in his presentation, Laaro Sulaimon advised the students to shun cybercrime and internet fraud.

Sulaimon urged them to be conscious of the risks involved in cyber crime, saying  they should desist from embracing its allure.

He said they should use their knowledge of the internet to build themselves rather than use it to self destruct.

The new students were also sensitised on the danger of corruption, the University’s code of conduct, documentation and registration as well as benefits of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

They were also warned against indecent dressing, bullying, examination malpractices and cultism among others.
