Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti’s biopic releases May 17

The highly anticipated biopic, Funmilayo Ransome Kuti will premiere nationwide on May 17th.

The biopic was one of the Nigerian films chosen for screening at the 12th Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFG) 2023.

It’s worth noting that the movie “Funmilayo Ransome Kuti” received nominations for Best Costume Design and Best Writing Movie at the 2024 Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA).

Tunde Babalola penned the script, and Bolanle Austen-Peters directed the film, narrating the life of the late Funmilayo Ransome Kuti. She was a celebrated Nigerian educator, political activist, and champion of women’s rights, as well as the mother of Afrobeat icon Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

The film delves into her time at Abeokuta Grammar School, her union with Isreal Ransome-Kuti, and her groundbreaking battle against colonialism and patriarchy, notably through the establishment of the Abeokuta Women’s Union.

The movie features notable actors such as Kehinde Bankole, Ajoke Silva, Adunni Ade, Adebayo Salami, Omowunmi Dada, Jide Kosoko, Delete Odule, Ibrahim Suleiman, Bikiya Graham-Douglas, Yewande Osamein, and Iyimide Ayo-Olumoko.

The movie also included the grandchildren of the late icon, Femi Kuti and Yeni Kuti.

Meanwhile, Austen-Peters, the film’s director, shared details about the premiere on her Instagram page @bolanleausten-peters, following the event held in Lagos on Monday.

”The film Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti went down in Lagos and the movie is set to be shown in the cinema soon.

 

“At the Premiere of Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, Gov Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, Babajide Sanwoolu of Lagos State, former Gov Donald Duke of Cross Rivers State, the Ransome Kuti Family, actors and crew of the award winning film: Best Movie, Best Screenplay AFRIFF 2023 Best Screenplay, AMVCA 2024 will be present.

”The movie will showing from this Friday in every cinema around in Nigeria”, she wrote.
