Nearly two years after leading a coup that ended more than five decades of Bongo family rule, Gabon’s military leader, Brice Oligui Nguema, has officially announced his candidacy for the April 12 presidential elections.
Following the ousting of President Ali Bongo in August 2023, Nguema pledged to return power to civilians after a transitional period. In January, the transitional Parliament approved a new electoral code allowing military personnel and magistrates to run for office.
Nguema made his announcement in a speech in Libreville, where he outlined his vision of a “Gabon rising from the ashes”, urging citizens to support his bid.
To participate in the elections, the former head of the presidential guard will be required to step down from his current role, at least temporarily. According to the Infos CTRI official Facebook page, “If he’s not elected, he will return to the barracks.”
With the elections scheduled for April 12, Nguema’s candidacy marks a significant moment in Gabon’s transition and political future.
