Gambari urges African Leaders to Promote Unity

African leaders have been enjoined to imbibe and promote values that will unite the continent and promote peaceful coexistence among the people.

The chairman of Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy and Development (SCDDD), Professor Ibrahim Gambari made the call during an interview with Voice of Nigeria in Abuja.

Professor Gambari, who was chief of staff to former president Muhammadu Buhari said African leaders should endeavour to identify areas and issues that would strengthen relationships among the countries and promote unity, democracy, and economic well-being of the countries and also take steps to convert any challenges or those vices could hinder rapid development.

“Africa should forget those tendencies it suffered in the past like colonialism, slavery, neglect among others and unite for a common goal of good governance which is key to the socio-economic growth of the countries,” he said.

He commended the Nigerian government for embarking on several measures and reforms geared towards promoting democratic governance, especially in the electoral process.

He expressed the need for adequate attention on the provision of needed facilities for the welfare and capacity building of the security agencies.

He noted that the SCDDD is committed to research, advocacy, training, and policy analysis in the area of conflict prevention, management, development, democratisation, and sustainable development in Nigeria.

“We are committed to improving the democratic and governance space through advocacy and the provision of context-specific solutions to government, policymakers, and some non-state actors in Nigeria and Africa,” he said.

Professor Gambari also noted that the SCDDD seeks to promote the evolution of Africa into a prosperous, politically stable, and globally respected continent that is motivated by a culture of good governance.

He commended the visionary leadership of the Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mallam Jibril Baba Ndace, whom he described as the man who has come for the job.

He extolled the roles played by Voice of Nigeria in promoting government policies and programmes to both Nigeria and the international community and promised to partner with Voice of Nigeria in promoting Nigerian projects.

He however remarked that he would continue to maintain his humanitarian service to the country.

Earlier in interaction with the Director General of Voice of Nigeria, Mallam Jibril Baba Ndace who led a delegation of the management team to Professor Gambari to commemorate with him on the occasion of his 80th birthday celebrations thanked God for his life and contributions to the society.

The Director General appreciated Professor Gambari for accepting to partner with Voice of Nigeria in the promotion of good governance and Nigerian projects.
