The former Nigerian Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai (rtd), has called for a unified national strategy that combines decisive military action with the nation’s spiritual resolve.

The retired general’s statement comes as a direct response to the heightened security challenges in states like Borno, where insurgent activities have intensified in the Lake Chad region.

Speaking on the strategic imperative, Buratai declared, “To secure a nation, you must first fortify its spirit. The courage of our soldiers on the physical battlefield must be met with the unwavering faith of the nation on the spiritual one.”

He emphasised that this approach is a “critical pillar” in the multi-faceted war against terrorism.

His endorsement provides significant weight to the recent announcement by Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, who declared a statewide day of fasting and prayer scheduled for 20th November, 2025.

While championing the spiritual initiative, Buratai was clear that it must run parallel to robust military operations.

He urged the federal government to ensure security forces are equipped with all necessary resources.

“The fight for peace demands that we equip our security forces with all necessary kinetic resources while simultaneously mobilising the nation’s spiritual strength,” Buratai stated.

He further called for a unity of purpose that transcends all divisions, urging citizens of all faiths to participate in the day of supplication.
“This is not about religion; it is about national solidarity and harnessing every tool at our disposal to achieve peace,” he added.

The Ministry of Defence, in a statement, reiterated its commitment to providing “kinetic support to ground troops” while encouraging citizens to observe the day as a show of national unity.

Analysts see the move, backed by a figure of Buratai’s military stature, as a potential morale booster for both civilians and the armed forces.
It is seen as an effort to foster the interreligious cohesion essential for long-term stability in a region long divided by conflict.

The statewide fast and prayer is expected to draw participants from across Borno and neighbouring states, with religious leaders from Islam, Christianity, and traditional faiths invited to lead the observance.
