The thirteenth Regional Sensitization Workshop on Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) designed for Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in West Africa has officially commenced in Lagos , the commercial capital of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Nigeria.
The event running through from 24th -26 June, 2025 is ongoing at the Radisson Hotel, Ikeja GRA, Lagos Nigeria.
It is being organised by the Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA), a specialized institution of ECOWAS mandated to fight Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing.
Mr. Ediwin W.Harris , the Director- General of GIABA in his welcome address and the official opening ceremony of the workshop re-emphasized the commitment of GIABA in fight against money laundering and financing of terrorism in West Africa.
The Director -General acknowledge the efforts of the different Civil Societies , non – governmental organizations and privates entities present in combating money laundering and terrorism in their countries.
“ Permit me to commend the resilience of the civil society and it’s engagement in the region, especially in matters relating to anti- money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism,”( AML/CFT).
Also speaking at the opening ceremony of the 3-day seminar was Timothy Malaye, the Information Manager and Acting Principal head of communication and advocacy for GIABA. He highlighted the objectives and achievements of GIABA as it celebrates the 25th anniversary this year.
While addressing the challenges faced by GIABA in a bit to solidify policies that will enhance accountability Of Individuals holding public positions and on the other hand fighting money laundering among member states, he urged all stakeholders present , especially the civil society to intensify awareness about the ripples effect of money laundering on the society.
Timothy Malaye mentioned that participants should champion this course of eradicating terrorism in our society..
