The Anglican Diocese of Gombe has announced that its Walter Miller School of Nursing Sciences in Kaltungo will soon take off by the second quarter of next year.

The announcement was made by the Publicity Chairman of the Organising Committee for the 25th Anniversary of the Diocese, Mr. Emmanuel Nwaekwe, during a press conference to herald the AnniversaryCelebration.

He said, “The school would be established to complement the vision of the church, as well as bridge the manpower needs in the health sector in Gombe State.”

Mr. Nwaekwe said the progress the Anglican Church had made in Gombe State was for the advancement of humanity, which was a deliberate move by the church  to touch the lives of the people positively.

According to him, the vision of the Anglican Church is to spread salvation, peace, love, tolerance and joy among others, which is the principle essence of missions.

Particularly, Mr. Nwaekwe said the Anglican Church was hinged on three core values of establishing a church, a school and a hospital, which all minister to the body, soul and spirit.

With the Anglican Church in Gombe now 25 years in existence as a diocese in Gombe State, he said it was 25 years of impactful existence, saving the lives of many people since November,1999.

Mr. Nwaekwe highlighted how Saint Luke’s Hospital in Gombe had treated a lot of Vesicovaginal Fistula, VVF patients, with the hospital at a point becoming the centre for VVF.

“We partner with the Federal, the state and NGOs. Saint Luke’s and Bingham University,” said Mr. Nwaekwe.

He listed some of the institutions established by the Anglican Diocese of Gombe and that have touched the lives of many to the Day Spring Nursery, Primary and Secondary Schools, and the Metro High School, where children are trained in morals and character, among others.

Mr. Nwaekwe said one of the successes recorded by the Church in Gombe was ensuring that young minds were disciplined and trained to become productive adults in the country.

“Sometimes you may say it, sometimes your conduct galvanizes and solve some challenges. When you have deviants and when you have challenges in raising children, and now you bring your children to a diocesan high school, there certain things you know your child will never do in Diocesan High School. For sure, your child will not be a Yahoo, a thief, a rapist, or somebody that insults people anyhow, because you have brought them,” said Mr. Nwaekwe.

He said despite the schools being run as Christian educational institutions, it does not discriminate against others from different beliefs, because the schools were run based on the policies of the Federal and State Governments of Nigeria and for the advancement of development of the area.

Mr. Nwaekwe praised the vision of the Pioneer Bishop of the diocese and now the Primate of the Anglican Church in Nigeria, Right Reverend Henry Ndukuba, who was intentional in advancing the mandate in the Anglican Diocese of Gombe.

He explained that, “The Diocese had invested about 700 million naira, where the Anglican College of Nursing Sciences put up structures for the take-off of the school, which may take off by the first quarter of next year.”

Mr. Nwaekwe, however, said there were little things that needed to be fixed and that the church was going to a 500 million naira Appeal Fund during the 25th Anniversary Celebration, so that the training of nurses and midwives would be done well.

He said the additional fund would help in completing the school and employment conducted, appreciating some well-meaning Nigerians, especially in Gombe State, who had supported the move by the Church.

He said the additional funds to be raised would also help in putting the required structures in place for the accreditation process, which had begun and was expected from the relevant authorities in the coming months.

The Chairman of the 25th Anniversary celebration, Venerable (Dr.) Chukwuma Ejikeme, thanked God for helping the Diocese of Gombe to grow from 18 church branches to over 150, with its presence all over the state.
