Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has appreciated the military and all the security agencies for paying the supreme sacrifice for the people to live in peace.
He stated this at the wreath laying ceremony in memory of the fallen heroes who paid the supreme price protecting the sovereignty of Nigeria.
The Governor, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Manassah Daniel Jatau, called on the general public to support the families of the fallen soldiers, by assisting those incapacitated in the cause of fighting to ensure that peace reigns.
“Many people usually forget those who have worked for peace to be attained and are still pursuing that course. Unfortunately, in the pursuit of this noble course, many have paid the supreme price of losing their lives, leaving their dependents in misery. Some that were fortunate and did not pay the supreme price are either maimed or suffering from permanent disabilities that have hindered them from engaging in any activities to earn a living,” Dr. Jatau said.

The Deputy Governor called on everyone to identify with the families of the fallen heroes in their pains by supporting them, while also thanking those who donated to the Nigerian Legion for the welfare of their members and families of the fallen heroes, thereby urging the leadership of the legion to be transparent in the use of the proceeds.
“Such acts are some of the ways that we the living can embark on to remember the fallen heroes, veterans, widows and orphans. This has been a long-time tradition and we are enjoined to donate generously so that the Nigerian Legion can help the needy families of the fallen heroes and veterans alike,” Dr. Jatau said.
He thanked other security agencies for the peace being enjoyed in Gombe State, saying even though the event was solely that of the military, current realities of warfare puts all security agencies at risk, where the Joint Task Force is challenged to expand the scope currently in existence.
He also called on the residents of Gombe State to cooperate, support and help the statutory security personnel and those in authority with timely information to prevent the occurrence of incidents, rather than reporting late, when the harm must have been carried out.
The Commissioner of Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr. Abdullahi Bello, said the ceremony was a testimony of the government’s commitment to honour the fallen heroes who laid down their lives in service to humanity during the First and Second World Wars, and Nigeria’s Civil War, peace support and internal security operations.
He said the ceremony had provided the opportunity for sober reflections on what life should have been without the patriotism, doggedness, and courage of the fallen heroes, where many lost their lives and while others still carry their scars and emotional trauma from their experiences.
The Chairman Nigeria Legion, Gombe Chapter, Sergeant Adamu Dogo (rtd), appreciated the Gombe State Government for supporting the members and families of the fallen heroes, especially for redeeming their five million naira pledged during the 2023 Armed Forces Emblem Appeal Fund.
He, however, appealed to the government to consider assisting the legion with office accommodation and official vehicles.
