Gombe Police Urges Vigilance Against Transformer Theft During Power Outages

The Gombe State Police Command has issued a security alert urging the public to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to prevent transformer theft, particularly during power outages.

In the vital security tips, the Commissioner of Police, CP Hayatu Usman, highlights that power transformers are highly susceptible to theft when the power is down due to reduced surveillance and fewer people in the vicinity.

He therefore called for increased security patrols around transformers during planned or extended outages and the deployment of temporary guards in high-risk areas.

CP Usman emphasized the importance of community involvement, recommending that residents and local neighbourhood watch groups keep an eye out for any suspicious activity around transformer sites.

He called for community awareness and engagement, which he said would notify nearby residents or businesses to be vigilant during outages and report any suspicious activity.

CP Hayatu called for limited access to transformers strictly to authorized personnel conducting regular inspections to identify and address any security vulnerabilities swiftly.

“Following, these security guidelines can significantly deter thieves and enhance community safety,” CP Usman said.

He encouraged the public to report any suspicious behaviour to local authorities immediately, to ensure the security of the vital electrical infrastructure.

The CP recommended requiring identification checks or electronic access cards for anyone entering transformer areas, saying “restricted physical access can make it harder for thieves to approach and remove large cables.”

He also said the timely inspections would allow authorities to address any security breaches or vulnerabilities immediately.
