The Gombe State Government has received a total of 42 thousand metric tonnes of assorted grains from the Federal Government through the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA.

The grains are in fulfilment of the promise President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made to reduce the impact of the current economic downturn being experienced in the country and in line with his Renewed Hope Agenda.

Performing the symbolic presentation of the grains in Gombe, the Northeast Zonal Director of NEMA, Mr. Suleman Yakubu, said the President had approved 42 thousand metric tonnes of assorted food commodities from the National Strategic Reserve under the custody of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.

“Today, we are here to hand over the food items to the state government for distribution to the identified deserving beneficiaries in the communities through the constituted committees in each Local Government Area,” said Yakubu.

He listed the membership of the committee as Local Government Chairmen, State Emergency Management Agency, a Traditional Ruler, Staff of the Directorate of State Services, Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp, Faith based organizations, Nigeria Union of Local Government Employee, Nigeria Red Cross Society, Women Association, Person with Disability Groups, Youth Associations, Principals of Boarding Secondary Schools, Civil Society Organizations and the Media.

Mr. Yakubu also said the assorted grains were maize, millet sorghum and garri, pointing out that Gombe state has a total of 242 metric tonnes of maize, equivalent to 4840 bags of 50 kg, sorghum is 539 metric tonnes, constituting 10780 bags of 50 kg while millet is 99 metric tonnes, making 1980 bags of 50 kg.

Responding on behalf of the Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, the Deputy Governor, Dr. Manassah Daniel Jatau, appreciated the President and NEMA for the provision of the assorted grains.

Governor Yahaya gave NEMA the assurances of judicious distribution of the items.

He said the Gombe State Government had been known for transparency and as such it would carry every sector along, which he said had been confirmed by the presence of the various security agencies, religious groups and civil society organizations and all sectors of the society.

Governor Yahaya said the central location of the state in the northeast, coupled with the insurgency in the region, had made Gombe the home of internally displaced persons, causing population increase and the need for more allocations and interventions.
