Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, of Gombe State has allocated 500 hectares of land for cassava cultivation across the 11 local government areas of the state.
This groundbreaking measure is aimed at revolutionizing agriculture and boosting food security in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The project was unveiled during an expanded security council meeting, presided over by Governor Yahaya in Gombe, where he directed each of the 11 local government councils to earmark 40 hectares of land, specifically for cassava farming.
Governor Yahaya said the decision to focus on cassava cultivation followed an extensive research into its nutritional value and versatility in food processing.
He emphasized that the step taken to boost cassava production, was about increasing agricultural output and addressing the pressing issues of hunger, food scarcity and the resolve to transform Gombe into a hub of cassava production in Africa.
“Cassava, a root crop, is known for its high carbohydrate content and its ability to thrive in various climatic conditions,” Governor Inuwa Yahaya explained.
He expressed optimism that the project would significantly impact the economy of Gombe State by attracting traders and investors from across Africa and beyond.
The Gombe State Governor, therefore, directed the Local Government Council Chairpersons to allocate the lands and also identify, as well as provide the necessary support to farmers and ensure the successful implementation of the project in their respective areas.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Gombe Local Government Council, Mr. Sani Ahmad Haruna, responded that the chairmen were determined to stop at nothing to ensure the success of the initiative.
“As His Excellency’s commitment to the development of our state is unwavering, and I have full faith in our capacity to drive this project forward,”said the Gombe LGA Chairman.
Mr. Haruna, who is also the Gombe State ALGON Chairman, gave the assurances to work tirelessly to ensure that each local government area maximized the potential of the allocated land.
“Our goal is to make Gombe State synonymous with high-quality cassava production,” Mr. Haruna said.
