In a bid to foster unity among security agencies and enhance collaboration for improved security in the state, the Gombe State Ministry of Internal Security, in partnership with the Nigeria Football Association (NFF), has launched the first-ever Gombe State Inter-Security Agencies Unity Football Competition.

The highly anticipated tournament, featuring teams from various security agencies in the State, was officially kicked off by Gombe State Deputy Governor, Dr. Manassah Daniel Jatau, at the Pantami Township Stadium in the Pantami district of Gombe, Gombe State.

The opening match saw the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) face off against the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), with the FRSC securing a 1-0 victory.

Speaking during halftime, Deputy Governor Jatau lauded the initiative, emphasising the role of sports as a powerful unifying tool. Dr. Jatau also praised the Ministry of Internal Security and the Gombe State Football Association (FA) for their vision in organising the tournament.

“Bringing security agencies together through sports will not only foster unity but also encourage collaboration and information sharing, ultimately strengthening the security of Gombe State,” he said.

“This initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property.”

Beyond its immediate benefits, Dr. Jatau suggested that the tournament should serve as a stepping stone to forming a Gombe State Security Football Team, which would further solidify inter-agency relations.

In the meantime, the Gombe State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Colonel Abdullahi Bello (Rtd.), highlighted the importance of the competition in encouraging synergy and camaraderie among security personnel.

Colonel Bello gave the assurances that the ministry would continue working closely with security agencies to promote peaceful coexistence in the state.

Similarly, the Chairman of the Gombe State Football Association,  Filibus Yakubu Sarma, described the tournament as an avenue to appreciate the efforts of security operatives in maintaining peace. Sarma also reaffirmed that the initiative aligned with Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s vision of making Gombe the most peaceful state in northern Nigeria.

He revealed that 25 preliminary matches would be played before the commencement of Ramadan fasting, with the final match set to take place immediately after the fasting period.

The opening game’s only goal came 26 minutes into the first half, securing the Federal Road Safety Corps’ victory over the NSCDC.

The competition is expected to strengthen cooperation among security agencies while also providing a platform for talent development in Gombe State.
