The Elders’ Committee of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in Gombe State has called on party members and supporters to remain calm and law-abiding following the demolition of the campaign Office of the Gubernatorial Candidate, Mr. Muhammad Barde.
Speaking with journalists in Gombe State, the Chairman of the Elders’ Committee of the PDP, Mr. Bala Magaji, after urging supporters against taking the laws into their hands, said the youths accepted the counsel and complied.
“We call on all peace-loving people of Gombe State to please remain calm.
“The political, business, and the elite class, any other people in Gombe, we call on them to remain calm. Let them not be provoked by this issue.
Nobody should take the law into his hand,” Mr. Magaji said.
While condemning the demolition, the PDP Elders’ Committee called on the government to ensure the peace and development in which the state was created in 1996 were upheld.
“The office is supposed to provide good roads, electricity, education, health, it’s not supposed to be harassing citizens,” said Mr. Magaji.
He lamented that the same structure that was demolished on Tuesday was an accommodating for the Campaign Office of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in 2019.
Adding that while various APC campaign posters were on display everywhere, even close to the Government House, the then PDP Government did not pull them down and wondered why the present government found them offensive.
The Chairman of the PDP Elders’ Committee also called on security agencies in the state to ensure that the incident did not repeat itself.
He is confident that the PDP has a greater chance of winning the 2023 election for the governorship in Gombe State.
According to the Secretary of the committee, Mr. Halilu Galadima, the PDP in Gombe State seeks peaceful co-existence with everyone and urges all members and supporters to do the same, despite the unfortunate event that was meted against their party.
Recall that the Gombe State Urban Planning Development Authority demolished the said structure because it was illegal and as part of efforts to reclaim the development master plan of the Gombe Metropolis.
The organisation also said they demolished the PDP Gubernatorial Campaign Office to maintain the prevailing peace and tranquillity of the State.
According to the Executive of the organisation, Group Captain Peter Bilal (Rtd), the demolition became necessary because the building contravened some sections of the Land Use Act Decree of 1978, Urban and Regional Planning and Development Board Law of 2001, and other development laws of the State.
