The Gombe State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining the Primary Healthcare Memorandum of Understanding (PHC MoU), with the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI).

Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, highlighted the administration’s progress in maternal and child healthcare, particularly in immunization and antenatal care, as reflected in the 2024 Nigerian Demographic and Health Survey.

The partnership under the MoU has facilitated financial and technical support, healthcare facility renovations, and training for frontline health workers.
The government has also received medical equipment and vehicles to enhance service delivery.

The Executive Secretary of the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Abdulrahman Shu’aibu, outlined sustainability strategies, including strengthening community engagement, integrating healthcare services, and mobilizing resources through partnerships with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).

“The focus areas include leadership and coordination, service delivery, logistics and supply chain management, data management, human resource development, and health financing.”
The Chief of UNICEF Bauchi Field Office, Dr. Nuzhat Rafique, emphasized that the PHC MoU, operational since April 2022 and running until March 2025, has significantly improved healthcare infrastructure, workforce capacity, and service delivery. She outlined the achievements to include recruiting and training 440 health workers, enrolling over 24,000 vulnerable women and children in a health insurance scheme, renovating healthcare facilities, and procuring equipment for vaccine distribution.

Key health indicators have shown remarkable improvements, such as an 80% increase in skilled birth attendance and a 170% rise in fully immunized children.
Overall, the Gombe State Government said, “It remains committed to ensuring the continued success and sustainability of the PHC MoU for improved healthcare service delivery.”
