The Gombe State Police Command has announced the appointment of CP Hayatu Usman as the 22nd Commissioner of Police (CP) for the state.
A statement by the command said the new CP assumed duty on November 13, 2023, following the statutory retirement of CP Oqua Etim on October 18, 2023 after attaining the mandatory retirement age of 60.
CP Hayatu Usman’s Biography
The statement said CP Hayatu Usman, who holds a BSc in Economics/Sociology from the Bayero University, Kano, was born on February 12, 1965, in Kazaure local government area of Jigawa State and joined the Nigerian Police Force in 1992 as a cadet Assistant Superintendant of Police (ASP) at the Nigerian Police Academy, Kaduna Annex.
The CP had, throughout his career, served in various states across the federation, with notable positions to include Patrol and Guard Officer. ‘B’ Division in Bukuru, Jos, Plateau State.
“…SCID Jos, OC Miango Police Station in Bassa LGA, Plateau State, DCO Oruwa division in Oyo State, DPO Central Police Station Gusau, and DPO Maitama division in FCT.
“He also served as the Area Commander, Zuru, in Kebbi State and DC DOPS Zone 8 HQ Lokoja.
“Before his promotion to Commissioner of Police, he served as the DC Operations in Gombe State Command.
“CP Hayatu received specialized training, including the Intermediate Command Course and Strategic Leadership Command Course at the Police Staff College, Jos,” the statement read.
The new commissioner of police solicited the support and cooperation of the general public in combating crime within Gombe State, pledging his commitment to implementing proactive policing strategies and community policing to ensure a safer Gombe State.
CP Hayatu Usman’s First Official Engagement in Gona
In the meantime, the new Commissioner of Police, Gombe State Command, CP Hayatu Usman, has in his first official engagement organized and attended a significant town hall security meeting in the Gona Emirate region, Akko local hovernment area.
The meeting, which brought together community leaders from Tumfure, Tabra, and BCJ axis of Akko local government area, was aimed at addressing the rising criminal activities in the areas and promoting community participation through effective community policing.
The commissioner of police emphasized the necessity of the meeting, as criminal activities, particularly in Tumfure quarters and surrounding areas, had been on the rise, stressing the crucial role of community policing in engaging the general public and their leaders in providing vital information to law enforcement agencies.
The commissioner gave the residents of the area the assurances of his commitment to ensuring their safety and encouraged them to reach out to the police whenever there was a need.
During the meeting, various speakers expressed their appreciation to the commissioner of police for his presence and the opportunity to discuss the pressing issue of crime in the area.
They also pledged their unwavering support in the fight against criminal activities within their jurisdiction.
The Lamido of Gona, Alhaji Usman Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, commended the commissioner of police for his visit and pledged his community’s collective assistance and cooperation in achieving a crime-free Gombe State.
In the end, the commissioner reiterated the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order in all communities within its jurisdiction, saying the engagement with the Gona Emirate community marks the beginning of a collaborative effort between the police and the public to combat crime effectively.
