Gombe State to host North East Constitutional Review hearing

Gombe is set to host Adamawa, Taraba and Gombe States for the two-day North-East Zonal Public Hearing on the “Proposed Alteration of the Provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The six states are divided into two groups, with Adamawa, Gombe and Taraba States meeting in Gombe, while Bauchi, Borno and Yobe States will converge on Bauchi for the review.

The Gombe North East Public Hearing on the “proposed alteration of the provisions of the 1999 constitution for Adamawa, Gombe and Taraba States, is to be chaired by Senator Muhammad Danjuma Goje, a former Governor of Gombe State.

The issues set for consideration include, Gender equity/increased participation of Women and Vulnerable groups in governance, the Federal Structure in governance and Power Devolution, as well as Local Government Administration and autonomy and Public Revenue, Fiscal Federalism and Revenue Allocation.

Other issues are Constitutional Provision for the Establishment of State Police, Judicial Reform, Adjudication of election and pre-election matters and other justice delivery concerns, Electoral Reforms that will make the Independent National Electoral Commission deliver transparent, credible, free and fair elections, Political parties, Independent candidature and election management.

Also to be considered within the two days of the public hearing in Gombe, are the issues of Socio-economic rights, Residency and indigeneship, Immunity or Removal of immunity in prima facie criminal cases, Time-line for Asset of Bills and Passage of Appropriation Bill, States and local government creation and the  Strengthening the independence of institutions, such as the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, Auditor General of the Federation and Office of the Attorney General of the Federation.

Also, the issues of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, the Legislature and Legislative Bureaucracy, Constitutional Roles for Traditional Rulers and Any other issues that promote the unity and good governance of the Nigerian nation would be up for consideration.

The public has been invited to bring along with them 15 copies of their submissions in hard copies, which are to be delivered to the secretariat on the day of the hearing at the venue of the event.
