The Gombe State Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists has called on the Gombe State House of Assembly and other relevant authorities speed-up action on passage of the Violence Against Persons’ Prohibited Act, as has been done in most states in Nigeria.
A statement by the Chairperson of the Association in Gombe State, Ms. Talatu Lamon, to commemorate the 2022 Day of the Girl Child, celebrated every October 11, said this would curb the challenges girls face in the society as well as empower them and fulfill their Human rights.
Ms. Lamon said “passing the bill and its implementation would give every girl the opportunity to live up to her potential and help in putting them in the forefront of change and invest in their future.”
“When a girl is educated, the Nation is educated and Girls are the change makers that drive progress in their communities. If the VAPP Act is domesticated, it will no doubt minimize challenges that bedevils young girls in the state, especially on Rape and other violence against women folks. Every girl has the right to a safe, educted and healthy life not only during adolescent age but also as they mature into women. Every girl has the potential to change the world as mother’s, entrepreneurs, mentors, household heads and potential leaders,” Ms. Lamon said.
She further appealed to all stakeholders in society to join in the fight against all forms of discrimination against women and girls in society.
