Google Enables Auto-Update OS Version For Older PCs

Alphabet has announced that Google will enable businesses to install an auto-updating Chrome OS version on Windows devices, potentially avoiding PC disposals after Windows 10 support ends next year.

The company assured that ChromeOS Flex will receive regular security updates and features such as data encryption, allowing users to continue using their Windows 10 systems.

Microsoft stated that from October 14, 2025, Windows 10 will stop receiving regular security updates, bug fixes, or technical support. Customers are encouraged to switch to Windows 11 or explore alternative options.

According to Canalys Research, the discontinuation of Windows 10 support might result in approximately 240 million PCs being discarded, given the potential low demand for devices lacking security updates.

Nevertheless, many PCs running Windows 10 could continue to operate effectively for several years following the cessation of operating system support.

In January 2024, ChromeOS held a 1.8% share of the global desktop OS market, significantly lower than Windows’ share, which stood at around 73%, according to data from research firm Statcounter.

ChromeOS has struggled with wider adaptability due to its incompatibility with legacy Windows applications and productivity suites used by businesses.

Google said that ChromeOS would allow users to stream legacy Windows and productivity applications, which will help deliver them to devices by running the apps on a data centre.
