Pricing Structure: High-End Rates for High-End Performance
Google has introduced tiered pricing based on the size of prompts:
For prompts up to 200,000 tokens:
Input tokens: $1.25 per million
Output tokens: $10 per million
For prompts exceeding 200,000 tokens (a capability many competitors don’t offer):
Input tokens: $2.50 per million
Output tokens: $15 per million
To put it in perspective, 200,000 tokens roughly equates to 750,000 words—longer than the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy.
More Expensive Than Other Google Models
Gemini 2.5 Pro is currently the most expensive model in Google’s AI lineup:
Gemini 2.0 Flash:
$0.10 per million input tokens
$0.40 per million output tokens

How It Compares with Competing AI Models
Compared to other leading AI models, Gemini 2.5 Pro sits on the higher end of the price spectrum:
More expensive than:
OpenAI’s o3-mini:
- $1.10 per million input tokens
- $4.40 per million output tokens
DeepSeek’s R1:
- $0.55 per million input tokens
- $2.19 per million output tokens
More affordable than:
Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet:
- $3 per million input tokens
- $15 per million output tokens
OpenAI’s GPT-4.5:
- $75 per million input tokens
- $150 per million output tokens
Gemini 2.5 Pro is also available for free under limited usage via rate-limited access.
Rising Prices Across the AI Industry
The launch of Gemini 2.5 Pro comes amid a broader trend of increasing prices for flagship AI models.
Recent premium releases have also seen steep pricing, including:
OpenAI’s o1-pro:
- $150 per million input tokens
- $600 per million output tokens
Analysts suggest the rise in costs may be driven by escalating demand and the heavy compute resources needed to run these state-of-the-art systems.
Strong Developer Interest
Despite the premium pricing, early response from the tech community has been largely positive.
Developers have praised the pricing as “sensible” given the model’s capabilities.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted the model’s popularity, revealing that Gemini 2.5 Pro has become the company’s most in-demand AI offering.
This surge has led to an 80% increase in usage across Google’s AI Studio and Gemini API platforms in the past month.
