The Nigerian government has expressed its dedication to enhancing and alleviating congestion in correctional facilities nationwide.

The Country’s Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-ojo disclosed that he was undertaking an inspection of the 3,000-capacity Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Janguza, Kano State.

The Minister who toured facilities at the Ultra Modern Correctional Centre, expressed the readiness of the government to build a correctional system that is based on the principles of reformation, transformation and rehabilitation.

He described the Janguza Correctional Centre as a work in progress.

The Interior Minister said the Ministry will create a correctional system that is reformative and transformational.

A place where people come and learn so that when they go out, they become better human beings.”

“A place where the lives of people will be transformed.”

Speaking on prison decongestion, the Minister said, “That is ongoing but the good thing for me is that we did a facility audit earlier and we can see that the result of the facility audit is how we are intervening. So, we are very empirical and scientific in our approach.”
