Governor Cautions Electricity Company Against Shortchanging Ebonyi State Customers
By Moses Nwite, Abakaliki
The Governor of Ebonyi State Southeast Nigeria, Francis Nwifuru has condemned in its entirety the frequent shortchange of Customers by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company EEDC in the State.
Governor Nwifuru frowned at the activities of the company where people of the state would procure and install Electricity materials just for them to have power supply and the Company would go ahead and either overbill the customers or in a way of theft vandalize such materials.
He made the condemnation when the top management of EEDC led by Praveen Chorghede paid him a courtesy visit in Abakaliki the State Capital.
The Governor said; “I have seen the wonderful proposal you have made but it is quite unfortunate that my people are highly shortchanged and I am not happy about it.
“Now, it is either you collaborate with Ebonyi people to give them steady light, maintain your properties when they are faulty or the State will look for alternative power supply. I know that the State is not the only one complaining, it cut across the country but as far as I know, some States are already making plans for alternative power supply and you know what it means.”
“We need your help as far as theft is concerned. You need to have security who shall be safeguarding your properties,” he emphasised.
According to him, there is no big industry in Ebonyi State, yet they can’t have light at least, four hours a day.
He maintained that the power supply in the region is very poor and cannot be tolerated any longer.
“I can’t stop your business but you must supply energy as it is supposed to be to my people. Don’t take Ebonyi consumers for granted. Our people are overbilled, it has to stop”
“If these anomalies are not corrected, we shall be left with no other things than any other alternative, “Governor Nwifuru
On his part, the regional Managing Director of EEDC Mr Praveen Chorghede said the company has a strategic transformation plan for energy supply in the Southeast.
He however informed that Nigeria is facing a State of Emergency as a result of ongoing Insecurity, which is hampering their activities.
Chorghede thanked the Governor of the State for the warm reception.
