The Governor of Ekiti State and Chairman, of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, Kayode Fayemi, has urged governors in the country to work in unity with President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to strengthen and build a better country, which will serve the interest of the people.
Speaking during a visit to Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, Fayemi said the role of the governors had always been to work in the overall interest of the people, by ensuring a better, stronger and a more people-oriented Nigeria.
He said this was so because Nigeria was worth fighting for.
“This is one country that has given some of us opportunities and we have a duty to fight for Nigeria and build a better country.”
He said the governors owed it a duty to meet the security and welfare demands of the citizenry because it was their role to address gaps being experienced in governance in the last 8 years.
“These are very critical times for our country, our President is doing his best to calm things down, the economy is not experiencing the best of times our security situation continues to be challenging and we are in a period of transition, so we definitely need to find a way not only to do what Mr. President is doing, but to also look for the best way to build on the gains of this administration over the last almost eight years now,” said Governor Fayemi.
He said it was time to revisit those things that were not being done as they should be, but that they should build on the successes of the previous and the present Buhari-led Government.
“The Nigerian Governors’ Forum cannot be aloof to this development, because we see it in the revenue accruable to us in our states; we see it in peace and security issues in the country, we see it in the economic development frontier in the country. And for us as governors, we always must find a basis to come,” said the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum.
For Governor Yahaya, the essence of having the unity of the governors was for them to learn from one another and share the ideas so that we uplift one another.
He said the successes of Gombe State were hinged on the guidance received from Fayemi’s leadership and efforts in the Governors’ Forum.
“You have led a worthy life and is worthy of emulation and we are working to see that we go in tandem with you to achieve all the lofty heights that you had to achieve in life. The happenings elsewhere are very alarming and very disturbing, coupled with the political season, towards the election. There are a lot of issues for the governors to consider,” Governor Yahaya said.
The Gombe State Governor believed that Fayemi’s words and counsel would guide the governors through the present challenges being encountered.
He gave the assurances that the APC in the state remained fully in control and that the achievements and support from the efforts of the president would take the state to the desired level.
Governor Yahaya equally gave Governor Fayemi the guarantee that the state would support the outcome of the visit, which he did not make known.
