Governor Makinde Forwards 7-man List of Commissioner Nominees to State Assembly
Olubunmi Osoteku, Ibadan.
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has reportedly sent a seven-man commissioner nominees’ list to the State House of Assembly.
Consequently, barring any last minute changes, the House of Assembly would, on Thursday, read on the floor the list of commissioner-nominees to serve as part of members of the State Executive Council.
The names of the seven nominees sent so far to the lawmakers include some of those who worked with the governor in his first term in office, as the governor had promised to return those who did well in the first term to continue in their service to the State.
A source close to the Assembly confirmed that the list was delivered on Tuesday evening after plenary.
Some of the commissioners who are returning include son of former Speaker, Oyo Assembly, Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, Seun Ashamu, who served last as the Oyo State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources.
Other returning ex-commissioners and the ministries in which they last served in Makinde’s first term administration include Akinola Ojo (Finance), Prof Musibau Babatunde (Budget and Planning), and Faosat Sanni (Special Duties).
Others are Prof. Daud Sangodoyin (Works and Transport) and Adeniyi Adebisi (Agriculture).
The new addition to the list is the women coordinator of the Omi Tuntun 2.0 Campaign Organization, Mrs Toyin Balogun.
It could, however, not be confirmed if the list contains the proposed ministries the commissioner-nominees would serve in.
A source said the names would be read on the floor of the House on Thursday while their screening and confirmation would follow suit, “as the governor is expected to swear them in on his return from his journey to the United States.”
The governor is also expected to announce his preferred Secretary to the State Government on his return.
An unconfirmed source mentioned the name of a long time political ally of Govenor Makinde, who served as a former Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning but was sacked when the governor dissolved his excos midway into his first term, as a likely preferred candidate for the position.
It was also gathered that the governor is likely to send the remaining 10-man commissioner-nominee list to the Assembly not too long after his return.
The source, who pleaded anonymity, said the governor had also received nominations from some APC leaders in the State who worked towards the success of his re-election.
