The Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has restated his administration’s unwavering commitment to press freedom and the empowerment of the media industry in the state.
The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Malam Ibrahim Waiya, made this known during the inauguration ceremony of the newly elected executive members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano State chapter.
Waiya, represented by a Director, Mr. Idris Yakassai, noted that the government remains committed to supporting training and capacity-building initiatives aimed at enhancing journalistic professionalism across the state.
He said, “Very soon, the Ministry will unveil groundbreaking and historic initiatives that will have a positive and far-reaching impact on working journalists and the journalism profession as a whole.”
While congratulating the new executive members, Waiya described their emergence as a reflection of the trust and confidence their colleagues have in their abilities and integrity.
He also applauded the outgoing leadership for their dedicated service and purposeful direction.
The Commissioner emphasised the strategic role of the Correspondents’ Chapel in shaping public perception about the government’s policies and the socio-political landscape of Kano State.
“As representatives of national and international media organizations, you serve as the lens through which the world sees Kano. Journalism is not just about conveying news — it’s about defending truth, upholding public interest, and contributing meaningfully to national development,” he said.
He further urged journalists to adhere strictly to professional ethics, especially in an era plagued by misinformation and fake news.
“Accuracy, objectivity, and fairness must remain your guiding principles.”
Waiya acknowledged the cordial relationship between the Ministry and the Correspondents’ Chapel, describing it as a longstanding partnership built on mutual respect.
He expressed optimism that the new executive will further strengthen that collaboration.
The Commissioner also extended gratitude to the national leadership of the NUJ for honoring Governor Yusuf with the “Media Friendly Governor of the Year 2025” award at the Union’s 70th Anniversary Gala in Abuja.
“This national recognition speaks volumes about His Excellency’s commitment to a free and vibrant press,” Waiya added.
In his acceptance speech, the newly elected Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Murtala Adewale, pledged to prioritize members’ welfare, rebuild unity within the Chapel, and foster a culture of mutual respect and collaboration.
“Our focus will be on healing divisions, investing in capacity-building through partnerships with institutions like NITDA, MacArthur Foundation, and Daily Trust Foundation, and advocating for journalists’ rights and access,” he said.
Adewale also promised to upgrade the Chapel’s secretariat with modern facilities, including internet access and a functional newsroom.
“We will explore sustainable, independent revenue sources through summits, journalism awards, and sponsorships without compromising our editorial independence.”
The Kano State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, represented by Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP Suleiman Gusau, pledged the Command’s continued collaboration with the Correspondents’ Chapel in promoting peace and security in the state.
