Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has approved the construction of a major water works project in Bama Local Government Area to address the persistent challenge of access to potable drinking water.

Bama, heavily impacted by Boko Haram’s occupation in 2014, was reclaimed by the Nigerian military in March 2015.

Zulum made the announcement on Thursday during a visit to the Shehu of Bama, Dr. Umar Kyari Umar Elkanemi, at his palace in Bama town.

The Zulum administration has previously undertaken nine mega water projects across Borno State, including in Ngarannam, Moramti, Pulka, Chibok, Azare, Madinatu, Shokwari in Jere, Gowza, Hawul, Konduga, and Maiduguri metropolis.

The governor emphasized that the new project would complement ongoing efforts to provide sustainable water solutions.

Additionally, Zulum revealed plans to rehabilitate Bama’s township road networks, aimed at easing transportation and enhancing movement within the area.

“Bama was among the communities worst affected by the Boko Haram insurgency. The scale of destruction was immense. However, we have made considerable progress in our rebuilding efforts in Banki, Darajamal, Mayenti, and other settlements,” the governor stated.

As part of efforts to integrate formal and non-formal education, Zulum announced the establishment of a high Islamic college in Bama. This institution will harmonize conventional education with Almajiri education, offering certifications to its students.

Earlier, the governor visited Abbaram, a village east of Kur Mohammed military barracks, to assess damages caused by Boko Haram insurgents. This visit was part of plans to resettle residents displaced for over a decade due to the insurgency.

Governor Zulum was accompanied by the senator representing Borno Central, Kaka Shehu Lawan, and members of the House of Representatives, Bukar Talba and Abdulkadir Rahis.
