Borno state Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum has expressed worry over road decays caused by overloaded trailers across the state.

The governor voiced his worry when he discovered overloading crisis during his visit to Gamborun Ngala in Maiduguri, Borno State.

Governor Zulum said the practice has lasting impact on the roads, stressing its detrimental effect on federal initiatives to enhance and extend the state’s infrastructure, impeding economic growth and development.

Zulum said, “you can see trailers loading up to 2,000 bags of cement, 2,000 bags of sugar. That entails 100 tons of items on one trailer. It is on this road that you can see such unholy act, where 100 to 150 tons are loaded on one trailer and plying on major roads.”

He further said, “the roads from Maiduguri and Gamborun-Ngala has been completely destroyed as a result to the impact of continuous overloading. The overloading is not only affecting the tar-roads but also affecting the un-tar roads, all the roads are now not motorable.”

The governor’s concluding statement emphasizes the critical state of the bridge linking Nigeria, Cameroon and Chad, warning of its imminent collapse due to overloading.

He called on the Nigerian Customs, Immigration, and other law enforcement officers to take decisive action to safeguard crucial trans-border trade.
