Gowon Advocates Unity, Applauds Military’s Fight Against Banditry

Nigeria’s former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon has commended the armed forces for their relentless efforts in tackling banditry and insecurity across the nation.

Gowon gave the commendation in an interview with newsmen in his office in Abuja on Tuesday.

He emphasised that every government has a responsibility to ensure the country functions effectively and urged Nigerians to rally behind the military in this unconventional fight against banditry.

Gowon reflected on his upcoming 90th birthday, which he will celebrate on Saturday, 19th October 2024, attributing his longevity to God’s grace.

He expressed heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity to serve Nigeria and acknowledged the unwavering support he has received from citizens throughout his life.

Recalling his early childhood, Gowon shared his deep love for Nigeria and his aspiration to become a teacher to give back for the free education he received. He highlighted the hardworking nature of Nigerians, regardless of tribe, religion or political affiliation and stressed the critical importance of national unity.

Reflecting on the civil war and current calls for secession, Gowon affirmed his commitment to maintaining the country’s cohesion, expressing a desire to see Nigeria flourish in unity. He noted the suffering experienced in other African nations and reiterated that the war was never desired, while acknowledging that soldiers acted responsibly in accordance with the Geneva Convention.
