A political group,, Movement of the People has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC for the timely registration of The Movement of the People (MOP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to a statement issued by the Spokesperson of the group, Joshua Iduwe, the new attempt marks the fourth time that the group would be seeking for similar request by INEC.

“A request for timely registration of MOVEMENT OF THE PEOPLE (MOP) an aspiring political party, before INEC’s statutory suspension of registrations (likely in February 2026) in anticipation of the 2027 elections.

“This marks the fourth formal attempt by MOP to register as a political party over a four year period. “For four years, we have followed every procedure and met every requirement, yet INEC continues to delay our registration,” the spokesperson stated.

“This is not just about MOP – it’s about ensuring that Nigeria’s democracy remains open to new voices and fresh ideas.” 1 The “Register To Rise” campaign will include digital mobilization, strategic offline activities, and Coalition building with like-minded organizations across Nigeria. MOP invites other intending Political Movements, Civil Society Organizations, and Concerned Citizens to join this coalition for electoral justice.

The statement described the group MOP as Scientific Socialist political movement aiming to build an equitable society through people driven governance. as inspired by the legacy of Fela Kuti, stressing that it has announced the launch of a nationwide advocacy campaign “Register To Rise: The People’s Voice for Electoral Justice.

The statement further stated that “Since 2018, no new political party has been registered in Nigeria, while 72 existing parties have been deregistered. This severe restriction limits citizens’ political choices and undermines true democratic representation.”

According to the group, the campaign was launched following INEC’s inadequate response to MOP’s multiple registration attempts since 2021, with the most recent application submitted on March 1, 2025.
